When does the custody over a child stop?

Your custody ends automatically when your child turns 18. You can also lose your custody because the court so decides. For example, if you treat your child badly or if the court declares your child to be of age.

In case of threat to the development of the child

When serious parenting problems arise, you are often first offered assistance. Is this assistance inadequate or do you or your child not want the assistance while the development of the child seems seriously endangered? Then a youth assistance institution can engage the Guardianship Council CN. The Guardianship Council CN examines whether the development of your child is in serious danger. And whether there are other possibilities to put a stop to the problems. See also: Problems at home.

Guardianship after end of custody

Does the juvenile court terminate the custody of your child? Then an expert institution or a foster parent receives authority over your child. They then exercise the guardianship over your child. Your child is then raised in a foster family or home. The guardian involves you as much as possible and informs you about your child.

Discontinuing joint custody

Are you and your partner separating but want to continue sharing parental custody? If so then you must submit an application to the court to do so.  If you fail to do so, the court decides which parent is awarded the custody in the event of a divorce.

Are you having very bad arguments with no prospect of improvement? Then there is a conflict divorce and you can ask the court for a decision. The court can also make a decision themselves if there are fears that the interests of the child are being neglected. After joint custody ends, the other parent still has to contribute to the upbringing and care of the child.
