Labour Inspectorate and Department of Labour strengthen support and enforcement
Caribbean Netherlands – Everyone in the Caribbean Netherlands should be able to enjoy fair, safe and healthy working conditions. In recent times, the Social Affairs and Employment Unit (SZW) of the National Office for the Caribbean Netherlands (RCN) has seen an increase in questions and reports related to employment. At the same time, the nature of these cases has become more complex, resulting in more intensive work for both the Labour Affairs Department and the Labour Inspectorate. As a result, their approach is being strengthened, with increased capacity and a greater focus on information and support.

Due to developments in recent years – such as economic and population growth, increases to the statutory minimum wage, and developments in labour legislation – the demand for clear information has grown. At the same time, the importance of proper supervision and enforcement of the rules continues to increase. More questions are being asked regarding payment of wages, work permits, working hours, sick leave, holiday entitlements and dismissal procedures.
The SZW unit closely monitors developments on the labour market. Each island faces different challenges, and the information needs and reports vary accordingly. That is why a tailored approach is taken per island, with attention to both employers and employees.
Strengthening supervision and support
In response to these signals, the approach of the Labour Affairs Department and the Labour Inspectorate is being reinforced step by step. Additional staff have been appointed, inspectors are receiving further training, and efforts are being made to improve the availability of information. This includes more targeted inspections, a proactive approach to reports, and preparations for new information sessions for both employers and employees.
The goal remains the same: employment that is fair (such as proper payment), safe (free from risk of injury), and healthy (without causing physical or mental harm).
Where can you go for help?
Good working conditions arise through cooperation. Employers, employees and the government each have a role to play. A good working relationship between employer and employee often helps to prevent problems. If this does not succeed, or if someone is unsure about what is or is not allowed, the SZW unit can be contacted.
