Configuring marine radio and other communication equipment
It is important for you to correctly programme your identification codes into your marine radio or other maritime radio equipment. Effectively programmed radio equipment can save your life in an emergency. To ensure the correct channel settings and the appropriate power range (25 Watts), set the marine radio to “International”. Also inform the RDI about your contact person or persons, who the Coast Guard can contact in case of emergencies.
Programming marine radio
Your license will contain your radio call sign and, if necessary, the MMSI (Maritime Mobile Service Identity). The call sign is primarily intended for verbal communication. The call sign must only be programmed as ATIS code in the marine radio if it is being used on Dutch inland waterways, and one must use a low power range (maximum 1 Watt). ATIS must be deactivated around the BES islands. If your marine radio features DSC (Digital Selective Calling), the 9-digit MMSI number will be important.
Make sure that you have properly programmed the MMSI number into your marine radio. Do this by referring to the user manual for your marine radio. You may be sanctioned if you have programmed the codes incorrectly. Take your license with you to the shop, if your supplier will be programming your codes for you.
Portable or handheld marine radio
Commercial sailing vessels (SCV code or so-called Appendix 6 ships) must have a fixed marine radio featuring a DSC (digital calling system). Recreational vessels are able to use a portable marine radio (handheld / portable marine radio) instead, although a fixed marine radio is advised. Handheld / portable marine radio must be reported to the RDI and also mentioned on your license. You will at least need a (VHF) Basic certificate Maritime Radio in this case.
DSC
To use a DSC marine radio around the BES islands, a (VHF) Basic certificate suffices. While in the Netherlands the minimum requirement is the Marcom B certificate.
Other equipment such as AIS, MOB or EPIRB
The MMSI number must also be programmed into this equipment. Please refer to the user manual for your device. If in doubt, please contact the Authority for Digital Infrastructure. You will need at least Marcom A or B to use an EPIRB.
