Due to the growth and changing composition of the workforce across different sectors, the Labour Inspectorate has noticed that knowledge of local legislation and the application of healthy, safe, and fair work practices are not always self-evident. Therefore, the Labour Inspectorate Caribbean Netherlands started an information campaign on the 12th of March on Bonaire. The campaign will later continue on Sint Eustatius and Saba.

Why this campaign?

According to the Labour Inspectorate, workplaces do not always comply with the applicable safety regulations. This is often not due to unwillingness, but because people are not sufficiently aware of the existing rules. With this campaign, the Labour Inspectorate aims to proactively increase awareness by providing information about legislation and applicable regulations.

The goal of the information campaign is therefore to promote fair, healthy, and safe working conditions through education and information. Enforcement is seen as a last resort to achieve compliance. In the coming weeks, the main focus will therefore be on informing and raising awareness. This does not mean, however, that appropriate action will not be taken in the case of clear violations.

Together with partner organizations, the Labour Inspectorate will visit a wide range of workplaces. During these visits, brochures will be distributed to both employers and employees in different sectors. The campaign also provides an opportunity, in an informal setting, to ask questions about what is and is not permitted in the workplace.

Cooperation with partner organizations

The Labour Inspectorate works closely on all islands with various partner organizations, such as the Supervision and Enforcement Department of the Public Entity Bonaire (OLB), the Caribbean Netherlands Police Force (KPCN), and the Immigration and Naturalisation Service Caribbean Netherlands (IND CN). In addition to carrying out joint inspections, these partners also play a signalling role. This allows reports and developments to be addressed and followed up upon more quickly.
