Working at JICN – The World Behind the Walls

The JICN is a Judicial Institution housed in an ultramodern building at Plantage Aruba, where all detainees from the Caribbean Netherlands can be placed. There are 113 detention places divided among the departments for Young Adults, Youth, Women, Admissions, Foreign Nationals, Prison, and the House of Detention. JICN also provides care for detainees and arrestees with additional clinical needs.

Behind the walls of JICN, more happens than you might think. Here, you work on safety as well as on people’s development. You stand strong, but you are never alone. Together we help make Bonaire safer.

Correctional Officer (PIW)

As a Correctional Officer, you work in the living units with people who are temporarily incarcerated. You provide structure, safety, and guidance. You supervise, but you do more than just watch. You engage with people, have conversations, and help them take steps forward. You are visible, calm, and clear.

What you do:

  • Guide detainees in their daily lives
  • Ensure everything runs safely and according to the rules
  • Recognize behavior and know how to respond to it
  • Work closely with colleagues from other departments

What you need to be able to do:

  • Remain calm in stressful situations
  • Communicate clearly and respectfully
  • Collaborate well in a team
  • Stand firm in your position

Security Officer (CB)

As a Security Officer, you ensure that the JICN grounds remain safe. You work with cameras, check who enters, and step in when necessary. You are sharp, alert, and keep an overview. You also support colleagues if something happens on the premises or inside the building.

What you do:

  • Check the access of people and vehicles
  • Monitor through cameras and patrols
  • Respond quickly to incidents or unsafe situations
  • Work together with Correctional Officers, security staff, and other colleagues

What you need to be able to do:

  • Always stay alert
  • Act calmly under stress
  • Have technical insight
  • Work well in a team
