When does a minor child need a temporary guardian?
A minor child can leave Bonaire for his or her studies and go and live abroad without his/her parent(s). Likewise, it can occur that you as parent go abroad for longer than three months and want to leave your child behind with a reliable person. It is then obligatory to appoint someone who will take over responsibility, care and upbringing of the child: a temporary guardian. A temporary guardian performs official acts on behalf of the minor, for instance signing important documents. The temporary guardian also manages the finances. The legal parent(s) can submit applications for temporary guardianship to the CN Guardianship Council. Then an environmental survey will be conducted at the guardian you appointed. If there are no objections, the court can appoint that person as temporary guardian of your child and you are suspended from parental authority.
