Medical referral in case of pregnancy
Medically necessary referrals for prenatal diagnostics and childbirth are reimbursed. In some instances, insured persons are entitled to support.
Prior to childbirth
If prenatal diagnostic facilities are not available on your home island, you are referred elsewhere. You are not automatically entitled to support. In the instance of an AUE (Advanced Ultrasound Examination), ZJCN does reimburse the support.
Childbirth
In the event of a medical referral for childbirth, you are not legally entitled to support. However, due to the societal and social impact of childbirth, ZJCN reimburses the flight of one accompanying person. The accompanying person stays in the same room as you. If you need to be admitted, the accompanying person can continue use of the room. The accompanying person is not entitled to a daily allowance.
Emergency referral
In the event of an emergency referral, you are transported by air ambulance or medevac helicopter. In addition to the medical assistance that is always available on board, you are entitled to one accompanying person. They are entitled to flights, accommodation, and a daily allowance for up to 10 days after childbirth. If an accompanying person wants to stay longer, the cost of postponing the return flight is at their own expense.
Do you want to give birth on another island?
The desire to give birth on another island is not a medical necessity. You are not entitled to a referral.
Flying during pregnancy
In general, there are no restrictions on flying until the 32nd week of pregnancy (28th week in the instance of multiple pregnancies). After that, airlines request a “fit-to-fly certificate” from your physician. After the 35th week, airlines generally no longer give permission. Always consult with the airline and your physician in advance.
