Sick abroad? This is what you need to know

If you are temporarily abroad and unexpectedly need medical assistance, then reimbursement may in some instances be possible via your ZJCN insurance.

When are you insured?

You are insured for emergency medical assistance abroad if:

  • The situation is so serious and urgent that you cannot wait until you return to your home island.

Please note: only the initial, acute treatment is reimbursed. Follow-up treatments and other care are not included in this cover.

What is not reimbursed?

The insurance does not cover costs for:

  • Non-urgent complaints (like a visit to a general practitioner or pharmacy);
  • Return journey or longer stay due to illness;
  • Repatriation in the event of death;
  • Loss of luggage or valuables.

What do you need to do in an emergency abroad?

  1. Report the emergency to ZJCN yourself as soon as possible (or let someone do this on your behalf) via info@zorgverzekeringskantoor.nl or call +599 715 8899 (Bonaire), +599 318 3379 (St. Eustatius), +599 416 3552 (Saba).
  2. Ensure that ZJCN receives a medical letter from which the emergency becomes apparent.
  3. The medical team of ZJCN assesses the situation and will let you know by email whether the care is reimbursed.

How does the reimbursement work?

  • You first pay the care costs yourself.
  • After that you can claim the costs from ZJCN.
  • The reimbursement is equal to the maximum rate for this type of care on your BES island. If that rate is not available, a suitable rate within the Dutch market is sought.

Attention: no letter of guarantee is issued, no advance payment is made, and you are not entitled to a daily allowance.

Did you receive medical assistance and was it an emergency? In that case, ZJCN may reimburse the costs under certain conditions.

You submit your expenses claims in one go, bundling all invoices together, in accordance with the procedure. You can submit your claim using the claim form.
