Job description

As an Medical Advice Assistant you will be a member of the medical advisory team. This team is responsible for providing detailed medical advice and for monitoring care.

You will help assess claims and the legitimacy and effectiveness of medical referrals.

Job tasks

  • You independently assess referrals, specifically with regard to physiotherapy. You are able to perform independent research and undertake the necessary actions in order to assess the legitimacy and effectiveness of the referral;
  • You assess authorisations for the medical referral of insured persons both locally and to destinations abroad, based on the instructions of the medical advisor;
  • You assess authorisations for the use of medicines and medical devices;
  • You perform supportive organisational activities on behalf of the service board and the medical advisor (appointments, requesting info, monitoring procedures, etc.);
  • You maintain informative contacts with insured persons, patience, doctors and hospitals;
  • You refer exceptional cases to the service board or the medical advisor;
  • You collect data for management information purposes.


Care and Youth Caribbean Netherlands [Zorg en Jeugd Caribisch Nederland] (ZJCN) is part of the Ministry of Health, Welfare and Sport (VWS) and is involved in healthcare and youth care in the Caribbean Netherlands. In contrast to the situation in the European Netherlands, ZJCN (VWS) is also responsible for health insurance and youth care in the Caribbean Netherlands. As a consequence the ZJCN's programme directorate is not only responsible for policy and legislation, but also for implementation. The ZJCN programme directorate is the point of contact within VWS for the countries of CuraƧao, Aruba and St. Maarten, and for the other ministries.

Job requirements

  • You have a higher vocational education (HBO) working and intellectual ability and are, for example, a trained physiotherapist or have sufficient relevant knowledge with demonstrable practical knowledge and knowledge of medical terminology;
  • You have at least 3-5 years of experience in a relevant position;
  • You have knowledge of relevant work processes in the professional field of medicine;
  • You are able to weigh in various (emergency) medical situations properly;
  • You are familiar with the methods, techniques and systems in the professional field and with the various options relating to the (operational) approach to (exceptional) (emergency) situations;
  • You have knowledge of relevant procedures, rules, legislation and regulations;
  • You have knowledge of, and insight into, the task and objective of, and the functional relationships within, the healthcare insurance office and related units or chain partners.
  • You have a written and spoken command of Dutch, English, Papiamentu and preferably Spanish.

What are we offering?

  • A job in accordance with the BES Legal Position of Civil Servants Decree [Rechtspositiebesluit ambtenaren BES];
  • A salary in line with the market, in preliminary salary scale 7 and job scale 8 (a gross monthly salary of at least $ 1,960.00 and a maximum of $ 3,126.00) based on a working week of 36 hours. Job scale allocation will take place on the basis of knowledge and experience.
  • Holiday pay (8.33% of your salary).
  • An end-of-year bonus (8.33% of your salary with a gross minimum of $ 1,750.00).
  • A pension scheme with the Caribbean Netherlands Pension Fund [Pensioenfonds Caribisch Nederland] (PCN).
  • 168 holiday hours based on a working week of 36 hours.
  • A temporary appointment of a year, with the prospect of a permanent appointment in the event of good performance and a positive assessment result.
  • A relocation scheme for candidates who are not a resident on the island.

Appointment requirements

  • A Certificate of Conduct (VOG);
  • A medical assessment in order to be admitted to the pension fund;
  • Dutch citizenship.

  • The salary is in American dollars, which is the official currency in the Caribbean Netherlands;
  • The Caribbean Netherlands has its own tax regulations. Income over and above the tax-free amount ($ 12,198.00 in 2022) is subject to wage tax of 30.4%;
  • Participation in the pension fund is mandatory and includes a personal contribution;
  • You are, or will become, a resident of the Caribbean Netherlands.
