The training

You undergo a two-year police training at level 4 of Senior Secondary Vocational Education (MBO4). The theoretical periods of the training will take place on St. Maarten with guidance from teachers from the police academy and practical coaches from the force. Practical experience is gained on Bonaire. The training starts in early 2025.

Job requirements

To be eligible for the police officer training, you must possess:

  • At least Lower General Secondary Education (MAVO), Senior Secondary Vocational Education level 3 (MBO3) / Higher General Secondary Education level 3 (HAVO3) (diploma)
  • Dutch nationality
  • Minimum age of 17
  • Driving licence B or intention to obtain this within two years
  • Swimming diploma or intention to obtain this within two years
  • Good command, knowledge, and application of Dutch, Papiamentu, and English at level B1.

The organisation

The Dutch Caribbean Police Force (KPCN) is a small, complete, and dynamic developing force that operates on the islands of Bonaire, St. Eustatius, and Saba. We are the police. We assist the residents and visitors of our islands, even when things get risky. We intervene when someone's freedom is unjustly endangered. At the moments that matter, that is when we are there. Then we try to solve what seems unsolvable. Sometimes at the risk of our own lives. We are vigilant and service-minded, vigorous and professional.

What do we offer?

  • An appointment in accordance with the Rechtspositiebesluit ambtenaren BES (Legal Status Decree on Civil Servants BES);
  • The salary for this position is set as follows:

Training period: salary scale 4, minimum grade 3, $1,860 per month with a 36-hour working week.

  • Holiday pay (8.33% of remuneration);
  • A thirteenth month (8.33% of the salary, with a gross minimum of $ 1,750.00);
  • A pension provision placed with Pensioenfonds Caribisch Nederland (PCN);
  • 168 holiday hours for a working week of 36 hours per week;
  • A relocation scheme for candidates who respond from outside the island.

The salary for this position is set as follows:
During the training period: remuneration scale 4, minimum grade 3, $1,860 per month with a 36-hour working week.
On completion of the training: remuneration scale 7, minimum grade 3, $2,520, - and maximum grade 15, $3,240, - per month with a 36-hour working week.

The appointment is a temporary employment for the period of the basic training. After successful completion of the basic training, a temporary appointment will be offered for one year, followed by a permanent appointment on good performance.

Appointment requirements

  • Dutch citizenship;
  • A Certificate of Good Conduct (VOG);
  • A medical examination for admission to the pension fund.

An assessment, sports test, medical examination, and screening (reliability and suitability test) are required and a mandatory part of the selection procedure. On completion of the tests, a positive certificate of good conduct (VOG) must be provided within the specified period before the training can be started.

Good to know for those interested outside the Caribbean Netherlands

  • The salary is in US dollars which is the official currency in the Caribbean Netherlands;
  • The Caribbean Netherlands has its own tax regulations. Income above the tax-free allowance ($ 20,424.00- in 2024) will be taxed at a rate of 30.4% in payroll tax;
  • Participation in the pension fund is mandatory, including a personal contribution to it;
  • You are or will become a resident of the Caribbean Netherlands.
