Job description
As an aviation observer at Bonaire International Airport, you will perform routine weather observations which will contribute to the safe and efficient use of the airport and are an element of the information used for flight preparations. At times of changing weather situations, additional notifications are compiled in order to provide a weather picture at the airport which is as accurate as possible.
You will be working on your own and will be providing a round-the-clock service. So that you can perform your duties properly, you will be trained as an aviation observer. Depending on your prior knowledge, this training will last a maximum of 3 months and will be provided partially in the Netherlands.
The organisation
The Royal Netherlands Meteorological Institute is the national knowledge and data centre for weather, climate and seismology. The KNMI provides meteorological and seismic information for the Caribbean Netherlands. Among other things weather forecasts for the residents of the Caribbean Netherlands and specific notifications for aviation and shipping are posted on the KNMI website for the Caribbean Netherlands.
In the event of extreme circumstances - such as hurricanes, huge waves and floods due to excessive rain - the KNMI issues warnings and recommendations to the Island Governors, the Kingdom Representative, local crisis coordinators and the National Crisis Centre (NCC) of the Ministry of Justice and Security. The KNMI works closely with meteorological services in the region
and provides meteorological information to keep air travel safe.

Job requirements
- You have successfully completed a course at senior secondary vocational education (MBO) level 3, for example in the field of Aviation Operations, or have a qualification at senior general secondary education level (HAVO) which includes mathematics and physics.
- You have an affinity with the weather and aviation.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills, in both Dutch and English.
What are we offering?
- A salary in line with the market in preliminary salary scale 6 (a minimum gross monthly salary of $ 2,100.00) and job scale 7 (a maximum gross monthly salary of $ 3,240.00) based on a working week of 36 hours. Job scale allocation will take place on the basis of knowledge and experience.
- A temporary appointment in accordance with the BES Legal Position of Civil Servants Decree (Rechtspositiebesluit ambtenaren BES).
- Holiday pay (8.33% of your salary).
- An end-of-year bonus (8.33% of your salary, with a gross minimum of $ 1,750.00).
- A pension scheme with the Caribbean Netherlands Pension Fund (Pensioenfonds Caribisch Nederland, PCN).
- 168 holiday hours based on a working week of 36 hours.
- A relocation scheme for candidates who respond from abroad.
Procedure
An assessment, case study, and/or reference check may be part of the procedure. This vacancy is opened internally and externally simultaneously, with the following order of consideration in the selection process:
- RCN civil servants on the BES islands (internal)
- Residents of the Caribbean part of the Netherlands (external)
- Other candidates (external)
- interviews in the first round of applications will take place on November 27 and 28.
Appointment requirements
- A Certificate of Conduct (VOG).
- A medical assessment in order to be admitted to the pension fund.
- Dutch citizenship.
Important information for interested parties outside the BES islands
- The salary is in American dollars, which is the official currency on the BES islands.
- The BES islands have their own tax regulations. Income over and above the tax-free amount, namely an amount of $ 20.424,-- in 2024, is subject to wage tax of 30.4%.
- Participation in the pension fund is mandatory and includes a personal contribution.
- You are, or will become, a resident of the BES islands.
