Job description
As a Crew A you work under the direction of an officer-in-charge, and you play a vital role within the team. In the event of an incident, you work closely with the team on firefighting, technical assistance, aircraft firefighting and the handling of hazardous substances. In addition, you express interest in learning tasks essential to your profession, e.g. working with breathing air.
Your commitment does not stop at the performance of these tasks.You also ensure that you are always professionally competent by attending regular training and refresher courses. With your conscious lifestyle and good physical and mental condition, you are ready to face this challenge.
About the Caribbean Netherlands Fire Department (BKCN)
The Caribbean Netherlands Fire Department (BKCN) falls under the Ministry of Justice and Security and provides firefighting, emergency assistance and disaster response services on Bonaire, Saba and St. Eustatius. The fire station on Saba is seeking reinforcement in the form of a fully trained Crew A.
Job responsibilities
- Firefighting in buildings, nature and at airport incidents (aircraft firefighting);
- Rescue operations and technical assistance;
- Safe evacuations in the event of airport incidents;
- Lifesaving first aid;
- Supporting duties within the force.
Job requirements
- Diploma Crew A (Caribbean Netherlands) required;
- AIR (Airport Incident Response) certificate or willingness to obtain it;
- In possession of driving licence B;
- Good command of the Dutch language;
- Stress-resistant, driven, flexible, team player;
- Excellent health and physical condition, including medical examination.
Work environment
- Irregular shifts on Saba
What do we offer?
- An appointment in accordance with the Rechtspositiebesluit ambtenaren BES (Legal Status Decree on Civil Servants BES);
- A competitive salary in initial salary scale 4 and job salary scale 5 of at least $ 2,132,- and at most $ 2.741,-, in case of a 36-hour working week. Assignment to a pay scale based on knowledge and experience;
- Holiday pay (8.33% of the annual income);
- A thirteenth month (8.33% of the annual income);
- Vitality allowance;
- A pension provision placed with Pensioenfonds Caribisch Nederland (PCN);
- 182 holiday hours for a working week of 36 hours per week;
- A temporary appointment of one year with the prospect of a permanent appointment for good performance and a positive assessment result
- A relocation scheme for candidates who respond from outside the island.
Procedure
The selection procedure consists of:
- Fitness test;
- Job interview and/or trial run with the team;
- Fire Department appointment screening (medical + psychological);
- Employment conditions interview.
This vacancy is being opened simultaneously internally and externally; the following order will be considered during the selection process.
- Official RCN staff on Bonaire, Sint Eustatius and Saba (internal);
- Residents of the Caribbean part of the Netherlands (external);

Appointment requirements
- A Certificate of Good Conduct (VOG);
- A medical examination for admission to the pension fund (participation is mandatory, including a personal contribution to it);
- Dutch citizenship.
Good to know for those interested outside the Caribbean Netherlands
- The salary is in US dollars which is the official currency in the Caribbean Netherlands;
- The Caribbean Netherlands has its own tax regulations. Income above the tax-free allowance ($21,373 in 2025) will be taxed at a rate of 30.4% in payroll tax in the first bracket; In the second bracket, a tax rate of 35.4% applies.
