The Organization

The Caribbean Netherlands Tax Administration (B/CN) is responsible for the assessment, supervision, and collection of national taxes, as well as the implementation of tax, customs, and excise legislation on the islands of Bonaire, Sint Eustatius, and Saba. Offices are located on all three islands. B/CN is part of the Dutch Tax and Customs Administration and offers a wide range of (online) services to residents and businesses.

The Department

The Assessment and Supervision Department (afdeling heffing em toezicht) is responsible, among other things, for reviewing tax returns, conducting (audit) inspections, and analyzing financial records for fiscal risks and interests. In addition, the department provides general administrative support for front desk services and handles objections and appeals.

Job description

In this role, you work on complex tax matters, often involving cases that have not been encountered before and for which new solutions must be developed. You act as an intermediary for the Tax Administration in dealings with external parties and are able to bridge conflicting interests through well-founded, substantive arguments. Where necessary, you defend and represent (tax-related) positions in interactions with supervisory or judicial bodies.

You also regularly lead projects. In addition, you develop practical tools, working methods, and systems within your area of expertise, and actively share these with colleagues. In doing so, you apply both national legislation and international tax law.

As a Tax Specialist, you will work on complex and challenging issues where your knowledge will make all the difference. You will b responsible for high risk dossiers and play an important role in the improvement and professionalisation of the tax assessment practice .

Job responsibilities

  • You independently handle tax matters that pose a high level of  risk to the Tax Office;
  • You advise on and support the approach  to  of complex tax issues;
  • You identify tax and technical issues and aspects that require a formal position or  policy development;
  • You assess new tax legislation and advise the board and MT members on this;
  • You draft statements of defence and you represent the Tax Office in complex tax matters before the Joint Court of Justice of Aruba, Curaçao, St. Maarten and Bonaire, St. Eustatius and Saba;
  • You advise and train employees in your own unit on taxation processes;
  • You provide information to external organisations such as businesses and citizens about tax-related matters;
  • You have an independent assessment role in the handling and/or processing of more complex notices of objection or cases with a higher (appeal) risk;
  • You actively contribute  to the development and assurance of professional/technical quality within your department;
  • You maintain close contact with the Customs Inspector and the Tax Collector, within the framework of the chain concept.

Job requirements

  • Completed training at the level of University Education (WO), preferably with a specialisation in tax law
  • Relevant fiscal, tax and customs knowledge
  • At least five years of demonstrable work experience in the discipline
  • Specialist knowledge of national (international) tax legislation

What do we offer?

  • An appointment in accordance with the Rechtspositiebesluit Ambtenaren BES (BES Civil Servants (Legal Status) Decree);
  • A competitive salary in preliminary scale 11 /salary scale 12 of at least $ 4,338 and at most $ 6,340 per month, in case of a 36-hour working week. Assignment to a pay scale based on knowledge and experience;
  • Holiday allowance (8.33% of the annual income);
  • 13th month (8.33% of the annual income);
  • A monthly vitality allowance in the year 2026;
  • A pension provision placed with Pensioenfonds Caribisch Nederland (PCN);
  • 182 holiday hours in case of a 36-hour working week;
  • A temporary appointment of one year with the prospect of a permanent appointment for good performance and a positive assessment result;
  • A removal scheme for candidates who respond from outside the island.

An assessment, case and/or reference check may be part of the procedure. This vacancy is opened simultaneously internally and externally, in the course of which the following order is taken into account in the selection:

  • Official RCN staff within Caribbean Netherlands (internal);
  • Residents of the Caribbean part of the Netherlands (external);
  • Other candidates (external).

Appointment requirements

  • A Certificate of Good Conduct (VOG);
  • A medical examination for admission to the pension fund (membership is compulsory, including a personal contribution);
  • Possession of the Dutch nationality.

Good to know for those interested outside the Caribbean Netherlands

  • The salary is paid in US dollars, the official currency in the Caribbean Netherlands;
  • The Caribbean Netherlands has its own tax regulations. The income exceeding the tax-free sum of $21,956 in 2026 is taxed in the first bracket, up to an income of $ 53,198, at 29.4%. In the second bracket, a tax rate of 38.4% applies.
  • You are or will become a resident of the Caribbean Netherlands.
