Job description
In this role, you work on complex tax issues, including cases that have not arisen before and for which new solutions must be developed. You act as an intermediary for the Tax Office and Customs towards external parties and you know how to bridge conflicts of interest based on substantive arguments. If necessary, you defend and represent (tax) positions in contacts with reviewing or judicial bodies. You regularly manage projects. In addition, you develop practical tools, working methods and systems within your own area of expertise, which you actively share with your colleagues. In this context, you apply both national legislation and international tax law.
As a Tax Inspector, you make a substantive contribution to complex cases, you act as a sparring partner for colleagues, and you contribute to the further professionalisation and quality assurance of the work.
Job responsibilities

You independently handle complex tax matters that pose a high non-performance risk to the Tax Office;

You act as an adviser / supervisor with regard to the approach of complex tax issues;

You identify tax and technical issues and aspects on which a position must be taken or policy must be developed;

As a taxation specialist, you assess new tax legislation and advise the board and MT members on this;

You draft statements of defence and you represent the Tax Office in complex tax matters before the Joint Court of Justice of Aruba, Curaçao, St. Maarten and Bonaire, St. Eustatius and Saba, if necessary;

You advise and train employees in your own unit on taxation processes;

You provide information to external organisations (businesses) and citizens about (complex) tax-related matters;

You have an independent assessment role in the handling and/or processing of more complex notices of objection or notices of objections with a risk of appeal;

You make a substantive contribution to the development and assurance of professional quality within your unit;

You maintain close contact with the Customs Inspector and the Tax Collector, within the framework of the chain concept.
Organisation
Belastingdienst Caribisch Nederland (B/CN) is responsible for the taxation, supervision and collection of the Rijksbelastingen (state taxes) and the implementation of the Tax, Customs and Excise Legislation within the islands of Bonaire, St. Eustatius, and Saba. There are offices on all three islands. B/CN is part of the Dutch Tax Office/Customs. At B/CN we also have a wide range of (online) services operational.
Department
The Taxation and Supervision Department (afdeling heffing en toezicht) is responsible for the assessment of tax returns, the performance of (accounting) audits and the analysis of accounts in terms of tax risks and interests. In addition, the department provides general administrative support for counter services and handles notices of objection and appeal.
Job requirements

Completed training at the level of University Education (WO), preferably with a specialisation in tax law

Supplemented with relevant tax, fiscal and customs knowledge

At least five years of demonstrable work experience in the discipline

What do we offer?

An appointment in accordance with the Rechtspositiebesluit Ambtenaren BES (BES Civil Servants (Legal Status) Decree);

A competitive salary in preliminary scale 11 and salary scale 12 of at least $ 4,338 and at most $ 6,340 per month, in case of a 36-hour working week. Assignment to a pay scale based on knowledge and experience;

Holiday allowance (8.33% of the annual income);

13th month (8.33% of the annual income);

A monthly vitality allowance in the year 2026;

A pension provision placed with Pensioenfonds Caribisch Nederland (PCN);

182 holiday hours in case of a 36-hour working week;

A temporary appointment of one year with the prospect of a permanent appointment for good performance and a positive assessment result;

The salary is paid in US dollars, the official currency in the Caribbean Netherlands;

The Caribbean Netherlands has its own tax regulations. The income exceeding the tax-free sum of $21,956 in 2026 is taxed in the first bracket, up to an income of $ 53,198, at 29.4%. In the second bracket, a tax rate of 38.4% applies.
