The Heffing & Toezicht Department is concerned with, among other things, the assessment of tax returns, auditing financial records against fiscal interests, imposing assessments and dealing with objections and appeals. This department is also responsible for providing administrative support and staffing a service desk.

As a Levy officer you will perform various administrative tasks in support of the team.  You are responsible for the correct and complete handling of customer requests and administrative tasks. You assist customers at the counter, via telephone and email, in which you advise and assist them.

Duties

You perform various administrative tasks for the settling of tax files;

  • You will check and assess information on various aspects;
  • You will register and process (administrative) objections.
  • You will support taxpayers and provide information on, for example, tax returns and objection procedures;
  • You serve as helpdesk officer;
  • You process and keep systems up to date;
  • You reach payment arrangements with customers;
  • You will actively provide input and cooperate to improve services provided by the department and the organisation.

The organisation

Belastingdienst Caribisch Nederland (B/CN) has 125 employees and is responsible for levying tax, compliance and the collection of state taxes, as well as the implementation of the taxation, customs and excise legislation on the islands of Bonaire, St. Eustatius and Saba. The legislation and regulations in question are different to those of the European Netherlands and other Caribbean parts of the kingdom. There are offices on all three islands.

Job requirements

  • You have completed an MBO 4 programme, preferably in the field of administration and law, and have been awarded the necessary diploma;
  • You preferably have at least a year work experience in position where customer contact is primary;
  • You are presentable and have good verbal and written communication skills in Dutch and English;
  • You don’t let your guard down easily;
  • You show initiative and have empathy;
  • Finally, you are prepared, as required, to work on all three islands within the Caribbean Netherlands.

What we are offering

  • A job in accordance with the BES Legal Position of Civil Servants Decree (Rechtspositiebesluit ambtenaren BES).
  • A salary in line with the market in preliminary salary scale 6 (a minimum gross monthly salary of $ 2,100.00) and job scale 7 (a maximum gross monthly salary of $ 3,240.00) based on a working week of 36 hours (job scale allocation on the basis of knowledge and experience).
  • An end-of-year bonus (8.33% of your salary).
  • Holiday pay (8.33% of your salary).
  • A pension scheme with the Caribbean Netherlands Pension Fund (Pensioenfonds Caribisch Nederland, PCN);
  • 168 holiday hours yearly, based on a 36-hour working week;
  • A temporary appointment for a year, with the prospect of a permanent appointment in the event of good performance and a positive assessment result;

  • The salary is in American dollars, which is the official currency in the Caribbean Netherlands.
  • The Caribbean Netherlands has its own tax regulations. Income over and above the tax-free amount ($ 20,424.00 in 2024) is subject to wage tax of 30.4%.
  • Participation in the pension fund is mandatory and includes a personal contribution.
  • You are, or will become, a resident of the Caribbean Netherlands.
