General Law on Old Age Pension

The General Law on Old Age Pension (Algemene Ouderdomsverzekering, AOV) provides for the basic pension for people who have reached the state age of retirement. If you live or work in the Caribbean Netherlands or have done so in the past, it is very likely that you are covered for the AOV. The AOV pension is paid out by the RCN SZW unit. You must apply for the AOV.

More information is given below. Or go directly to:

Attestatie de Vita

Notice: If you receive AOV from the Caribbean Netherlands but you no longer live on Bonaire, Saba or St. Eustatius, you normally submit a proof of life (Attestatie de Vita) to the RCN-unit for Social Affairs and Employment (SZW) twice a year. Because many organizations are closed due to measures related to the coronavirus, you do not have to submit a proof of life for the period of November 1st - December 15th, 2020. You will continue to receive your AOV pension.

AOV age

The AOV age (state retirement age) rises in steps to 65 years.

  • If you were born in 1955 you are entitled to AOV from the age of 65.
  • If you were born after 1956 you are entitled to AOV from the age of 65.

AOV applications

You must apply for the AOV six months before you reach AOV age. You can do this at the SZW unit during consulting hours. You will need to take with you:

  • Your passport or ID card (sedula)
  • Proof of your bank account number

It is also possible to apply for AOV online. Download the  AOV application form here. Send the completed forms together with a scan of the documents listed above to pensioen@rijksdienstcn.com.

If you apply late for your AOV, you will be able to receive AOV for a maximum of 1 year with retrospective effect.

If you have lived or worked outside of the Caribbean Netherlands, you may not have been insured and your AOV pension may be lower. In that case you may be eligible for an additional supplement from the social relief.

AOV date of payment

The following table shows the payment dates for 2012. If you do not have a local bank account it may take longer to receive your pension.

If you have submitted your application on time, you will receive your first AOV payment on the first payment date following your birthday. For example, if you reach the AOV age on the 5th of February, you will receive your first AOV payment on February 24th.

Christmas allowance

You receive a Christmas allowance if you were entitled to AOV in September of that year. The Christmas allowance is equal to the amount that you received in September. The Christmas allowance is paid out together with the December AOV payment.

Pension from other countries

If you have also lived on Curaçao, Aruba, Sint Maarten or the Netherlands you will probably also be entitled to AOV or AOW from these countries. You must however make a separate application for this. The required forms can be obtained from the SZW unit.
