The KNMI [Royal Netherlands Meteorological Institute] provides meteorological and seismic reporting for the Caribbean Netherlands. The separate KNMI website for the Caribbean Netherlands includes weather forecasts for the inhabitants of the Dutch Caribbean and specific messages for aviation and shipping.
In the event of extreme conditions - such as hurricanes, high waves and floods caused by heavy rain - KNMI issues warnings and recommendations to the authorities, the Kingdom Representative, local crisis coordinators and the National Crisis Centre (NCC) of the Ministry of Justice and Security. KNMI works closely with meteorological services in the region and with Météo-France, the French national meteorological service.
On St. Maarten, St. Eustatius and Saba, KNMI seismometers are installed to record earthquakes in real time. This measuring network is especially designed to monitor the seismic activity of the Mount Scenery and Quill volcanoes. It is also used for any tsunami forecasts.
