Health Care Complaints Office

On May 4, 2015, the CN Healthcare Complaints Office was opened on Bonaire, St. Eustatius and Saba. Residents of the three islands can use this office to draw attention to the quality of care and for questions about the options for handling complaints on the quality of care. 

The Complaints Office is independent of the healthcare providers and has been established by the Health Care Inspectorate. On each island, the Complaints Office is located in the RCN office.

The Complaints Office does not resolve any complaints itself, but does help the person asking, for example by providing information or by referring him/her to the right person or authority for the handling of a complaint or report.
Question can be, for example:

  • What can I do if I have a complaint about a care provider?
  • How do I file an official complaint with a care provider?
  • Who can I send a signal about the quality of care?
  • How do I claim compensation? 

Depending on what someone wants to achieve by drawing attention to a problem or submitting a complaint, the Complaints Office can refer you on. This can be to the healthcare provider itself, a complaints officer, a complaints committee, the Health Care Inspectorate or - if compensation is being claimed - to the court.

What does someone want to achieve with a complaint or by drawing attention to a problem?

Example of what someone wants to achieve with a complaint or by drawing attention to a problem are:

  • I would like an apology
  • I want my complaint to be recognised; I want to be heard. 
  • I want to prevent this from happening again, to myself and to others.  
  • I want to contribute to good health care by drawing attention to this
  • I would like a judgment on the legitimacy of my complaint or I want measures to be taken

Consulting the Complaints Office is free of charge.
