The Immigration and Naturalisation Service Caribbean Netherlands recognises the conclusions of the Commission Supervision Personal Data Protection BES (CBP BES) in the research ‘Transparency as foundation’ that was published last week. The research shows that the IND-CN is aware of the laws and regulations regarding the processing of personal data. In addition, the Commission also observes vulnerabilities that the organisation must tackle in the short term.
The Commission examined the processing of personal data and the use of the privacy statement which is used to explain to people what data the IND-CN collects, why the Service does this, and with whom the IND-CN shares the data. In the research, the Commission expresses various concerns, but it also concludes that the IND-CN has taken important steps in the area of awareness and transparency regarding privacy protection and the processing of personal data.
Taking action
The IND-CN was already working on various specific improvement measures, like the clarification of the privacy statement and new measures to improve the registration, retention and checks regarding access to personal data and their use. The research findings confirm the course set and support the ongoing improvement process. The IND-CN will be taking action on the recommendations from the report to establish concrete agreements and to take control of the further professionalisation of processes, work instructions and internal control.
Transparent
It is important that the CBP BES can follow the steps that the IND-CN is taking in the coming period and the results that are obtained. That is why the Service remains in contact with the CBP BES about the plans for improvement and the progress of adopted measures. The protection of personal data in a lawful, adequate and diligent manner is and remains an important responsibility of the government.
