On 28 August, State Secretary Annet Bertram of the Ministry of Infrastructure and Water Management will make a working visit to Bonaire. The visit will focus on addressing the situation at the Selibon Lagun landfill and its consequences for nearby residents and the environment.

The State Secretary will visit Selibon Lagun. She will also meet with Stichting Pro Lagun, an organization representing the interest of neighbouring residents, to discuss the impact of the problems surrounding the landfill on their daily lives and the environment.
The situation at and around the Selibon Lagun landfill is very concerning, both for the health of people on Bonaire and for the environment. In recent months, the Public Entity of Bonaire and Selibon have already taken a number of steps, partly in cooperation with the Dutch government. Nevertheless, additional measures are needed to achieve a structural solution. The government is fully aware of this and is committed to addressing the issue, together with the Executive Council and Selibon itself. The State Secretary will hold discussions with the Island Governor, the Executive Council, and Selibon about possible solutions and the roles of the various parties involved, both in the Netherlands and on Bonaire.
Also, the State Secretary will symbolically launch a monitoring network. Specialized measuring equipment will be used to monitor the impact of the landfill on nearby residents and the environment.
