Acting Kingdom Representative decides to take over

Acting Kingdom Representative Jan Helmond (wRv) is taking over the Public Entity of Bonaire’s (OLB) administrative responsibilities regarding the waste problem on Bonaire with immediate effect. He will temporarily be responsible for issuing permits, supervision and enforcement at Selibon Lagun. OLB will retain its full authority for all other tasks. The wRv informed the Executive Council of his final decision in a personal meeting.

Discussions

Last Wednesday (13 November) the wRv already conveyed his intention to take over in a personal meeting with the Executive Council. Discussions were also held that day with Selibon, the Island Council and Pro Lagun. He then publicly announced his intention in a video message. On Thursday 14 November the wRv received and assessed OLB’s official opinion regarding the intention before making his formal decision.

Cooperation

Despite differences of opinion regarding the administrative process it is absolutely vital that all parties involved will cooperate in close harmony during the coming period: employees of Selibon, residents of the broader Lagun area, the Executive Council and civil servants of the Public Entity. We face a common problem and can only solve it together. The various government ministries stand ready to assist.

How will the process continue?

The wRv will communicate regularly and openly about the joint actions that will be taken from now on.
