Equal treatment is a constitutional right. Anti-discrimination legislation will now also apply to Bonaire, St. Eustatius and Saba.
This means residents of the BES islands who feel discriminated against on whatever grounds (gender, age, origin, religion, disability, sexual orientation etc.) will be entitled to the protection provided by this act in the future. They can also submit a complaint to the BES anti-discrimination service and ask for free help and advice. Finally, they can ask the Netherlands Institute for Human Rights (College voor de Rechten van de Mens) to rule on their case.

The responses will be used to develop a new version of the proposal for a new law, which will be sent to the Council of State and then to the House of Representatives later this year. The proposal for a new law is expected to come into force in 2025.
