Becoming Dutch
The IND Caribbean Netherlands handles requests from people with a different nationality who want to become Dutch through the procedure of naturalization or option.
Naturalization
The naturalization procedure is intended for foreigners who, in principle, have legally resided in the Caribbean Netherlands for five years or longer. This is a thorough procedure in which various conditions are tested, such as the length of stay, integration and language knowledge.
Option
The option procedure is a simpler and cheaper alternative to becoming a Dutch citizen. This procedure is available for specific groups, such as young people who were born in the Caribbean Netherlands and have lived there for a longer period of time.
New efficient procedure
From the 1st of January 2025, the procedure applying for Dutch citizenship will be more efficient. The procedure goes from six steps to three contact moments:
1. An initial appointment for detailed information.
2. An appointment to submit all necessary documents, sign the application and pay the fees.
3. Collect the Royal Decree after approval.
Less paperwork and faster processing of the procedure make the process clearer and more customer-friendly. Please note: the conditions for becoming Dutch remain unchanged.
