As of 1 January 2011, there is a compulsory healthcare insurance for all residents of the islands Bonaire, Sint Eustatius and Saba (the Dutch Caribbean). This uniform insurance introduces more legal equality and prevents people from being uninsured. The insurance provides for medical care ('cure') and long-term care ('care'). For more information about the 2017 care package, see the page 'Healthcare insurance'.

The BES Health Insurance Office (ZVK) has been the operator of this healthcare insurance since 1 January 2011. The ZVK is commissioned by and under the responsibility of the Ministry of Health, Welfare and Sport. The ZVK continues to work on improving the health care on the islands of the Dutch Caribbean.
