Protection of marine mammals and sharks

In September 2015, the Secretary of State for Economic Affairs proclaimed the ‘Yarari’ Sea Mammals and Shark Sanctuary for all waters of Bonaire and Saba.

‘Yarari’ is a Taíno Indian word that means ‘a fine place’. The reserve must be a safe haven for whales, dolphins and sharks. This completes one of the action points of the management plan for the EEZ (see also the report ‘Proposal Towards a Dutch Caribbean Marine Mammal Sanctuary’ and the ‘Shark protection Plan for the Dutch Caribbean’.)

Research is ongoing to increase knowledge about these animals so that they can be better protected. The Ministry cooperates with the Agoa Marine Mammal Reserve (FR), the Stellwagen Bank National Marine Sanctuary (SBNMS) in the US and the Silver Banks Marine Mammal Reserve in the Dominican Republic.
