The natural environment in the Dutch Caribbean is the resource for economic development. The natural environment should be of the greatest concern both in the sea and on land.
Neglect/loss of the natural environment means loss of economic potential. Whether it is the ‘Washington Slagbaai Park’ on Bonaire, the underwater atoll ‘National Park the Saba Bank’ at Saba or the National Park ‘The Quill/Boven’ on St. Eustatius. Together with the Executive Councils, nature organisations and the Ministry of Infrastructure and Water Management, the Ministry of Agriculture, Nature & Food Quality (LNV) wishes to actively and thoroughly map out this care for the islands. A Nature Policy Plan for the Dutch Caribbean has been drawn up as a guideline for this.
To protect sea life, an integral nature management plan for the waters of the Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ) has been drawn up together with the other countries of the Kingdom in the Caribbean, Aruba, Curaçao and St. Maarten. The Ministry of LNV also wants to encourage sustainable agriculture and fishing in the Dutch Caribbean.
LNV cooperates in all this with the Executive Councils, the Chambers of Commerce, the tourist offices, companies in the utilities sectors, nature organisations, interest groups and civil society organisations, and entrepreneurs’ associations.
